Winter Games NZ 13-28 August 2011

The 100% Pure New Zealand Winter Games take place in Queenstown, Wanaka, Naseby and Dunedin during August 2011. 10 days of thrilling skiing, snowboarding, ice skating and other winter sports competitions featuring top international athletes. Watch some of the best snow action ever in this part of the world! The next winter games will be held in 2013, dates to be confirmed.

Winter Games NZ - Snowboarding Coronet Peak - click for more What is Winter Games NZ?

The biggest winter sports event outside the Winter Olympics, Winter Games NZ features the world's top athletes competing in 26 snow sports disciplines ranging from ski racing to curling, snowboarding to skating as well as a full adaptive skiing programme. The ten-day long event also includes plenty of off-snow activities for spectators and athletes with live music and entertainment in downtown Queenstown and Wanaka.

The Winter Games includes alpine skiing, free skiing, cross-country skiing, snowboarding, curling, ice skating and adaptive snow sports, as well as the demonstration sports of winter triathlon and natural luge.

Coronet Peak, The Remarkables and Cardrona commercial ski areas near Queenstown will host the skiing and snowboarding events. The Snow Farm near Wanaka the cross-country skiing and winter triathlon events. The ancient sport of curling will be held at the Maniatoto Ice Rink in Naseby, Central Otago and the natural luge track is located here also. Dunedin is hosting the ice skating and ice hockey events at its fantastic indoor ice stadium.

All snow sports events are free for spectators as are the opening and closing ceremonies. Only the stadium events in Naseby and Dunedin have an entry fee. The event venues are within easy driving distance of each other. Rent a campervan or rental car and explore some of the South Island's most stunning scenery. Queenstown and Wanaka are premier alpine resorts with a range of accommodation options and other activities including scenic flights, adventure activities, world class wineries & golf courses.

As with all snow sports events of this size, a large force of volunteer workers are required for smooth running. If you want to help out, sign up at the official website.
